Theodore Roosevelt was the right man at the right time for America. The US had just become a world power for the first time as a result of the Spanish American War. Roosevelt was a hero of that war. He brought a wealth of political experience to the job of President, and relished flexing American muscle when a job needed to be done, like the Panama Canal. As former Assistant Secretary of the Navy, he realized the building of a Canal would allow the US to maintain a flexible two ocean navy. This was essential for a world power. He was also a physically vigorous man, furthering America's youthful status. He was a champion of the environment, preserving large tracts of land to be protected by the Federal Government for all to enjoy.
