Johnson was personally responsible for the existence of the center. The facility came into being through legislation originated by Johnson in 1958.

The Kennedy Space Center was originally named Launch Operations Center. It was given the name Kennedy Space Center by Lyndon Johnson's executive order on November 19, 1963. It became official on December 20th, 1963.
