There were four candidates for the Presidency, and following the Constitution at the time, no candidate received a majority vote, and therefore the vote was brought to the House of Representatives. After the election, Jackson was the clear leader, with 99 electoral votes. However, Henry Clay, the Speaker of the House, a presidential candidate drop-out, used his influence to bring John Quincy Adams to his presidency, in an undocumented and unrecorded bargain in which he would receive what was at that time the most important position in the government short of president, Secretary of State.
