Before the age of printing, and Mass Communication generally, spelling and pronunciation varied from place to place, and there was often no "correct" spelling. Many people pronounce the "r" in "iron", while many pronounce the word the same as they pronounce "ion". In the process of standardising (American: standardizing) spelling, decisions were often arbitrary, and occasionally even ironic.

The English spelling of words has evolved over time, influenced by historical factors such as the borrowing of words from other languages, sound changes, and spelling conventions. In the case of "iron," the spelling likely derives from its Old English form "Δ«ren," which in turn traces back to the Proto-Germanic word "Δ«sarnΔ…." Changes in pronunciation and spelling conventions have led to the current spelling of "iron."
