There are many reasons that Abraham Lincoln should be remembered. He was a president that believed in equality for the people. He also taught others to stand up for what they believed was right.
Abraham Lincoln is important because he led the nation through its worst failure in its history, the US Civil War. Also, He used to be just a boy from Illinois and he became the 16th president. He went through being the president during the civil war and that's not easy. Many people believe he was a hero, by an overwhelming degree.

When the U.S. was divided in half (The South, which favored slavery vs. the North, which was against slavery), he went to war with the south, which, at the time, called itself The Confederate States. The North won thanks to Abraham's friendship with Frederick Douglas, who talked Abraham into allowing freed Black Americans of the North to fight in the war, which increased the chances of the North's victory. When the Confederate States surrendered and became the United States again, Abraham signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which made slavery illegal in all parts of the United States, including the South.
