After the Revolutionary War, the United States was financially broke. The new nation needed money. The only way to get it was through taxes. Although the people despised paying taxes to England, and was not thrilled with paying the federal government taxes.

The people realized that money had to be raised, in order to pay for the things that the United States, and its citizens needed to have a strong and prosperous country. Alcohol was one of the first taxes that would be introduced and enforced.
