Until 1967 when the 25th amendment was added to the Constitution, a vacancy in the office of vice-president was not filled until the next presidential election.

Consequently, if the president died and the vice president became president or the vice-president died in office, there was no vice-president until the next presidential election. Those presidents, such as Tyler, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson and Arthur , who were never elected as president, therefore never had a vice-president.

Before ratification of the 25th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution in the winter of 1967, whenever the vice presidency was vacated due to the death or resignation of the vice president or the president, the office stayed empty until the next Inauguration Day. Therefore, the four Presidents who were never elected President but were elected Vice President and took over the presidency when the President died never had a Vice President.

From the time that John Adams was sworn in as the first U. S. Vice President, the vice presidency has been empty 18 times for a total of 13,803 days. That's equal to 37.79 years!

Reasons:

  • 8 times: death of the President
  • 7 times: death of the Vice President
  • 2 times: resignation of the Vice President
  • 1 time: resignation of the President
