He never was President. Any presidential aspirations would have been short-circuited by the Chappaquidick tragedy, which resulted in the death of 28 year old Mary Jo Kopechne, an office worker. Really he should have been required to resign from politics right then and there, but... He survived and lived on as Senator for Massaschusetts almost up to his death.
