Why did Franklin Roosevelt refer to Eleanor Roosevelt as Babs?

"Babs" was short for "Baby". While their marriage took place on March 17th, 1905 their formal three and half month honey moon to Europe was postponed until the summer due to FDR's final law school exams. Eleanor, who had always suffered miserably on previous ocean voyages found herself a far better sailor on the initial sailing then she had expected. This came as a wonderful surprise given her anxieties over pleasing her new sea-loving husband, who prided himself greatly on his skills as a sailor. However on the return voyage Eleanor found herself increasingly ill. Believing it at first to be sea sickness he teasingly dubbed her "Babs," as a more loving form of "cry-baby."However her nausea continued after they had made land and, both of them being concerned, she was seen by her doctor who informed her that she was in fact experiencing morning sickness. This was to be the first of six pregnancies, and with each one she would spend the first three months suffering severe morning sickness. Despite the happy revelation of her actual condition the name "Babs" stuck as a term of endearment between the two for the rest of their 40 year marriage. Their children: Anna Eleanor (m. Boettiger) (m. Halsted), 1905-1975 James, 1906-1991 Franklin Jr., 1909-1909[deceased at 7 months] Elliot, b.1910-1990 Franklin Jr. II, b. 1914-1988 John Aspenwall, 1916-1981
