Adams had weak support durring his presidency because, rumor heard that, after being elected, was claimed to make a "corrupt bargain", or private agreement with Henry Clay, that if he were president, he would make Clay the secretary of state. This whole process caused Adam's to lose confidence and appreciation, however, not all might be true. As for the rumor was made by Andrew Jackson's supporters, which could have just made up a simple excuse so that they can convince Jackson to be the next president. Fortunately for the supporters, Jackson was chosen right after Adams and Adams was no where near to being close to geting picked twice. However, only god knows what happened that day, and no human has the right to call people true or false.
