The Republican candidate was Richard Nixon, and his running mate was Spiro T. Agnew. Nixon had been Vice President under Eisenhower, and lost to John F Kennedy in 1960.

The Democratic candidate was Hubert Humphrey, the incumbent Vice President, and his running mate was Edmund Muskie of Maine.

The American Independent Party nominated Alabama Governor George Wallace, and his running mate was retired USAF general Curtis LeMay.

Nixon won, but there was a strong showing by the 3rd party of Wallace and LeMay, who won 5 states and garnered 46 electoral votes. Had Nixon gotten 32 fewer electoral votes, it would have thrown the election to the House of Representatives.

Other minor candidates in the election included comedians Pat Paulsen and Dick Gregory, activist Eldridge Cleaver, prohibitionist E. Harold Munn, Socialist candidates Henning Blomen and Fred Halstead, and the female Communist party nominee Charlene Mitchell. Also listed was a faux Yippie nominee, a pig named Pigasus.

Nixon as PresidentRichard Nixon won the election to be come the 37th President of the United States. President Nixon was reelected in 1972, and was in office from January 20, 1969 until August 9, 1974, when he resigned from office.

In 1968, Johnson was the incumbent, but chose not to run. Senator Eugene B. McCarthy from Minnesota was a critic of the Vietnam War, and was a Democrat. Robert F. Kennedy also ran as a democrat, and he would have most likely won the election, if he had not been assassinated after winning the California primaries. Hubert Humphreys was the Vice President, and ran as a democrat. Humphreys won the Democratic Party Nomination, because Kennedy was dead, and McCarthy was too radical. Nixon ran with Spiro Agnew as the Republican Candidate. George Wallace ran as an Independent. Nixon and Agnew won, and were re-elected, only to both be removed or to resign from office before their second term ended.

In 1968, Lyndon Johnson, the incumbent, was the obvious Democratic choice at first. However, anti-war candidate Eugene McCarthy, senator for Minnesota, challenged him in New Hampshire and Robert Kennedy entered the race. Johnson withdrew and Hubert Humphrey began running, using surrogates in primaries and working on delegates in states without primaries . Kennedy was killed in June and Humphrey won the nomination. For Republicans, Richard Nixon won over Ronald Reagan, Nelson Rockefeller and George Romney, who withdrew early.
