Gilbert du Motier, better known as the Marquis de Lafayette, became Washington's aide and later successfully commanded forces of the Continental Army. Often pursued by the British, who sought to deter France from aiding the American colonies, Lafayette was named a citizen of three US states following the Revolutionary War.
