Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller was the most decorated Marine in history. He fought, or tried to fight, in every war in his lifetime--they refused to reinstate him on active duty for Vietnam because of his age. He holds 27 different awards, some of which were issued multiple times--he has five Navy Crosses, five Navy Presidential Unit Citations and five Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medals. He is the Marine's Marine.
A Chesty story: A Republic of Korea Army commander colocated with a US Marines commander called Chesty Puller to report a Chinese push.
Puller: "How many Chinese are attacking you?"
ROKA: "Many, many Chinese!"
Chesty asked for another count and got the same .
"Put my Marine liaison officer on the radio."
Up came the Marine lieutenant: "Yes sir?"
Chesty: "Lieutenant, exactly how many Chinese you got up there?"
LNO: "Colonel, we got a whole (expletive deleted) of Chinese up here!"
Chesty: "Thank God! At least there's someone up there who knows how to count!"
