In 1608 John Smith was elected council president of the Jamestown settlement, and English endeavor in the New World. Smith was a competent leader, but the colony still endured harsh weather conditions, lack of food, and Native American attacks.

He basically saved the ailing colony. By 1608 half of the colonists in Jamestown had died, leaving only fifty three emaciated survivors. John Smith came to Jamestown and was elected president in September of 1608. He enforced military discipline and negotiated with the Indians for food for the colony. He later returned back to England and the colony came close to collapse again. If you want to read more about Jamestown, I'd suggest reading Paul Johnson's History of the American People pages 23-28. Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was established by the Virginia Company of London, and named after James I of England. Captain Edward Maria Wingfield was elected as the first president of the governing council in Jamestown in 1607.
