The President is the supreme commander of all US forces. As such, they follow his orders. He appoints the other officers and meets with the joint chiefs of staff. The Department of Defense is also under his direction. He argues for military expenses from Congress and may push for certain weapons such are Star Wars, stealth bombers , etc. The President also determines military policy. For example, a presidential directive created racial equality, allows gays to serve and allows women in combat units. Although he can not declare war, he can enforce his diplomacy by deploying troops to foreign locations, ordering strategic bombing and sending ships to trouble spots.

Commander in Chief.
The US President is the Commander and Chief of all US military forces.
Henry Clinton was the British Commander-in-Chief during the Battle of Monmouth, which was part of the American War of Independence. The battle took place on June 28, 1778.
Yes. The military is considered a part of the executive branch. The President is also considered to be the highest ranking commander of the military- the "commander-in-chief"- although he is not actually in the military. The Founding Fathers wanted the commander-in-chief to be a civilian, not a military officer.
The US Supreme Court rendered a decision on the case involving President Truman's seizure of US steel mills in 1952 Six justices declared Truman's actions as unconstitutional. Part of Truman's defense on the action was that he needed to insure that a shut down of the steel mills would endanger US troops in the Korean War. While it was clear, Truman was the commander in chief, the US Constitution referred that title as the top commander of the army, navy and airforce. The Court ruled that it did not mean he was commander in chief of the country. This was a set back on US presidential powers.
The US President is Commander in Chief of all the US Military Forces (US Navy, US Air Force, US Army (US Marines are part of the US Navy) 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Yes, the President is the Commander in Chief of all the armed services. The Marine Corps is part of the Navy Dept.
George Washington, who had been a successful leader in the french and Indian wars, volunteered for the revolutionary war in 1775. John Adams nominated him to be the commander in chief, Washington was appointed to Major general (2 star general) and congress selected him as commander in chief, which was not yet the term for president, but was a term for supreme military commander.
George Washington was the first president to command the army, but there was no operational US Navy during his presidency. The US Navy was established in 1794, but had no ships until the first frigate "United States" was completed in 1797, when John Adams had become President. The Constitution specifies that the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the military. The first US President (George Washington) was thus the first Commander-in-chief of whatever military forces were in place at the time.
Although Vietnam was part of the lives of presidents Eisenhower & Kennedy, the war dominated the lives of Commander in Chief's LBJ & Nixon. Watergate effectively eliminated Nixon from the position of C & C (Commander in Chief), and when he left office (resigned) there was NO ONE remaining to defend South Vietnam...and Congress immediately went after the Vietnam War...by completely cutting off any further funding to South Vietnam...with no shells for their artillery, no fuel for their tanks, and other accouterments of war, the south quickly fell to the northern invaders.
No. The US President is also Chief Commander of the Armed Forces (military) and head of the Executive Branch of government; the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (or Chief Justice of the United States) is head of the Court during his (or her) term of office. The President cannot play a direct role in the operation of the Supreme Court under the doctrine of "separation of powers" because the Judicial Branch is an independent part of government.
