US President Abraham Lincoln was the first US president to be assassinated. He was not the first to die in office, however. The ninth US president, President William Henry Harrison died shortly after his inauguration in 1841. John Tyler, the vice president then took over as president as per the US Constitution. The 12th US President, Zachary Taylor died in office in 1850.
No US president died that year, but McKinley's Vice President, Garret Hobart, died on November 21, 1899. Outside of the United States, France's President Félix François Faure died on February 16, 1899, while in office.
No former US president died in 1970. Closest was Dwight Eisenhower who died Mar 28, 1969.
US President James K. Polk died after getting cholera.

He served only 30 days as US President. He died from an illness that caused succession.
