Its always been around with ninjas and such, but when it comes to airplanes, where its usually applied, it came about in the cold war.

-----------------------------------

Dr. Franklin Rodgers, associate head of Radar Division of Lincoln Laboratory, was approached in 1956 by the government requesting that he work on a way to make planes invisible to radars. (pg. 13 of "From Rainbow to Gusto: Stealth and the Design of the Lockheed Blackbird" by Paul A. Suhler). In his work, Frank discovered that a flat metal disc was almost completely invisible to radar. He noted in his family that "maybe that is why UFOs are so good at hiding from radars".

Dr. Rodgers was given that task of putting together a team to research the problem and was the one that created the special coating that was first tried on U2 planes. This reduced the radar returns but didn't make them invisible and it also made them too heavy and less aerodynamic. So it was suggested that Dr. Rodgers work with a airplane design team on an all new plane. With Dr. Rodgers' understanding of radar technology, he helped the team design the SR-71 with the most unique look that we have become accustom to today as being stealth.

There is a monument in memory of Dr. Rodgers found in the Galva Cemetery in Galva, IL next to the grave site of his brother, Herb Rodgers. All knowledge of Dr. Rodgers' contribution to the CIA in development of stealth technology was kept under the highest security clearance. It was not until the last few years of his life that Dr. Rodgers even confided his involvement in the project to his family in fear of retribution from the government.

At his brother's request, Dr. Rodgers wrote his memoir but kept them under lock and key until his death. It was then that his brother worked to find others that worked with Dr. Rodgers on this project and contacted the government to remove the classification on Dr. Rodgers involvement on the project. This lead the way to renown military author Paul A. Suhler to write his detailed book on the SR-71.

How do I know all these things? Dr. Rodgers was my uncle and my father spent that last years of his life working to get his brother's name out from under the blanket of secrecy.
