The Continental Congress appointed a committee of five individuals to negotiate peace with Great Britain in 1779. The committee consisted of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Laurens. Their efforts ultimately led to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which formally ended the American Revolutionary War.
