Audie Murphy earned three Purple Hearts. Here are the dates (and I am including the immediate circumstances) of the injuries. His first was as a staff Sergent, during the Vosges Campaign in France, Sept, 25, 1944, when mortar exploded at his feet, knocking him unconscious, killing two soldiers and seriously injuring three others. Murphy earned his second Purple heart, Oct., 26, 1944, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was shot in the right hip, by a richocheting bullet from a German sniper, in the Montagne Forest, after which Murphy shot the sniper between the eyes, killing him. Murphy earned his third and final Purple Heart, Jan., 25th, 1945, the day before he earned his Medal of Honor. In the Riewihr Woods, near the town of Holzwihr, he was thrown down by a mortar, which splintered onto fine slivers, wounding him in his left leg.
