They are posted that night or the next day. In a very close race it might take some time to decide the electoral votes. In some cases the supreme court decides what candidate will get a sates votes if it is to close to call. This most recently happened in the 2000 election when George Bush won over Al Gore. Al Gore won the popular vote but George W Bush won because the Supreme Court decided that GEorge should get the vote.
