U.S. Grant is the one. His name was really Hiram Ulysses Grant, but when he went to West Point. a mistake was made by the man who nominated him, and he became Ulysses S. Grant. He never bothered to have it changed so his name in the army was Ulysses S. Grant.

Ulysses S. Grant was the 1th President of the United States. He led the union armies in the civil war, actively engaging in several successful battles.
The 'S' is believed to stand for Simpson, which was his mother's maiden name. Some say it didn't stand for anything. It was just put there to indicate 'US', as in Uncle Sam, and also to echo his nickname 'Unconditional Surrender'.
Some would say Grant. But I say General William Sherman. He captured Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbia. He was very succesful. i say Grant. i had a history crossword puzzle and Grants the only one that fits.
