1994 was the year of the Republican contract with America. The Republicans picked up 54 seats in the House to give them a majority of 230-204, their first House majority since 1946. In the Senate Republicans gained 8 seats to take a 52-48 majority, their first there since 1986. Newt Gingrich became House Speaker and Bob Dole the Senate majority leader.
