Alta California (Upper California) and Baja California were merged into a single territory with Monterey as the capital. The local residents were becoming increasing displeased with the series of territorial governors who were appointed from the national capital in Mexico City until finally in 1836 Monterey-born Juan Bautista Alvarado seized control of the territorial capital. With one exception all of the territorial governors who followed Alvarado were from California until 1848, when all of what had been Alta California became part of the 529,000 square miles that Mexico ceded to the United States as part of the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War.
