He took the painful step of ending the system of prisoner-exchange, causing atrocious conditions in the overcrowded prison-camps, as the Confederates steadily ran out of manpower and had to surrender.
As President, he was less successful ('Ulysses the Useless'), and he was swindled by a bank who had given him a seat on the board to raise their profile. The strain of this incident brought on throat-cancer, and he reluctantly wrote his memoirs, to give his family something to live on after his death. These were emarkable well-written, by someone who didn't look as though he would write a good book, and they sold well for years. He finished them just days before he died.
He is known for being a great military leader, our 18th President, and the man on the $50 dollar bill.
