President Eisenhower believed that presidents should not take sides - rather, he thought that the president should be a strong moral leader. On his desk, a sign in Latin read, "gentle in manner, strong in deed," which he tried to be. Eisenhower liked to do most of the hard presidential work back-stage, instead of up-front and he tried to have as little government action as possible.
