John Cabell Breckenridge was vice President of the USA during the Buchanan's Presidency, then candidate to the presidential election of 1860. He was defeated by Lincoln and was most known for that failure.
After the secession and the breakout of Civil War he became first Brigadier and then Major General in the Confederate Army. From January to April 1865 he was Secretary of War of Confederate Government.
John Breckinridge was a lawyer and politician. He became the youngest ever Vice President of the United States of America in 1857 but was expelled after joining the Confederate Army. He served within the Confederate army for many years and won his most significant victory at the Battle of New Market. However, after the fall of the Confederate capital he fled the country and spent years in Cuba, Great Britain and Canada. He finally returned to Kentucky in 1968 when the current President declared amnesty for all former Confederates
