President Lincoln was a federalist which means that he believed the rights of the federal government superseded those of the states leading to many constitutional gray areas. While most people will tell you that slavery was the issue that started the civil war, it was really that farming cotton and tobacco was a highly profitable and vital part of the United States. Even though the south had the right to leave the union according to the constitution, Lincoln knew that having a major land mass and financial stability leave the union would leave the north open to a major depression.

Given 10-20 years the south as an independent nation of states could have grown powerful enough to over take the northern states still left in the union. President Lincoln's action was treason against the united states but (like so many other things) was done after "trying to do the right thing". I can promise you that swearing to uphold the constitution then spitting on it a few short years later was a hard task... even for him. It was for this reason that Booth took his life...as a treason to the united states.
