John K. Kennedy was a PT boat commander in the south pacific in WWII. A PT boat was a wooden patrol boat with machine guns and torpedoes. It was only 55 feet long and had three gasoline powered Rolls Royce engines and capable of speeds about 55 miles per hour. His boat was once sunk and he spent many days on a deserted island with the survivors of his crew. They were finally rescued when he sent a message carried by local natives that he carved into a coconut.
