Thomas Jefferson was among the first political figures (along with James Madison) to form the Republican-Democratic party. This took place in the late 1790s. Jefferson believed in strictly obeying the Consititution and that the Government shouldn't have implied powers under it. He was a strong supporter of power to the people and believed that the citizens should have maximum power in government and not wealthy educated men. As Secretary of State at the time, Thomas Jefferson often found himself in a feud with the Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton often believed that the wealthy should control government and he was the founder of the Federalist party. Unfortunately for Jefferson, Washington, who was the president at the time, usually agreed with Hamilton's policies. Outraged, Jefferson resigned from his position, shortly followed by Hamilton himself. But when Jefferson came back a few years later as Vice President, he kept working toward a government controlled by the citizens.
He wrote the Declaration of Independence, he went to France to get money for the war, and was president. He also wrote books, cataloged all of the plants in VA, was an inventor, and collector of historical items. He had a museum in his home.
