The country was divided into multiple sections and were not at the time, a nation. Since the south disliked him because they thought he would ruin their way of life and they eventually would secede, the north was loyal to lincoln and they had a higher population of people. The north had majority vote towards the winning of lincolns election.

Lincoln won with less than 40% of the popular vote. His victories in various States earned him the Electoral College vote as a winner. There is a sound assumption that if the Democratic party had united behind one Democrat candidate, Lincoln would not have won the election.
