Beginning with their rise in 1993, the Bloc Quebecois had always been the most popular party in Quebec, recieving about 40% of the vote within the province (which is approximately the number of Quebecers who support independence) and winning 2/3 of the provinces seats.
However, in the 2011 election, their share of the vote in Quebec dropped to 23%, while the New Democratic Party increased their share of the vote in the province from 12% to 40%. The resulting NDP landslide in the province nearly wiped out the Bloc Quebecois - only 4 members of the party were reelected. The Liberals and Conservatives also lost seats in Quebec to the NDP.
Such results are not unheard of in Canada. In 1993, the Progressive Conservative Party had their membership reduced from 169 seats to 2 seats after losing almost 60% of their vote. The 1993 election remains the most spectacular defeat of a ruling political party in the Western World.
