The person who does his voice is from London, so therefor he is British.
The Gekko is from the Philippines, even though he has an English accent. I know this because in 2000 timeframe. I was talking to my geico insurance representative in Washington DC and told her my nickname for GEICO insurance is "Gekko" When stationed in the Philippines I used to watch those little green lizards crawl up and down the walls of my home. They were so common, you just got used to them. When I joked with her about the harmless little lizards she said she would like to bring it up to geicos advertising department. Well it wasn't long after that I seen the little english accented lizard on television. I think to this day I had a hand in his creation.
I think you are asking about the gekko, the cartoon reptile used in Geico car insurance commercials. The actor who voices the gekko is named Jake Wood, and he uses an exaggerated British-Cockney accent. Mr. Wood is from London, England, but we are never told what part of England the gekko is supposed to be from.
The Geico gecko only exsists in the Geico commercials,so this means that in real life, the Geico gecko is not real.
The gecko in the Geico commercials does have a cockney (poor) British accent.

You can make a Geico Gecko costume by sewing green felt together. Sew this felt into the shape of a lizard's body.
No. Geico is an insurance company. A Gecko is, however, a lizard and thus a reptile.
