All urban legends to the contrary, the new purple and gray $5 bill is worth exactly $5.
Rumors about an "incorrect date" started because both this design and the most recent green and black bills carry the same series date, 2006. Series dates cause a lot of misunderstanding because they don't refer to the date when a bill was printed, but instead refer to the year that the Treasury Secretary first took office. The date isn't changed until a new Secretary is appointed (and in some cases not even then). Because Henry Paulson was appointed Treasury Secretary in 2006, all bills printed during his term were dated 2006 regardless of the calendar year or the ink color.
