I've not seen factual Demographics on this, but I would assume it is between the age of 28 and 32 years old. Most officers come from ROTC out of college, meaning they graduate around age 22 and should be a Captain in approximately 4 - 5 years. However, there are many officers that go through OCS and others are given Direct Commissions and those numbers would have to increase the age range.

The answer varies according to the Captains advancement pace however the average age is somewhere between the mid to late 40's. By the way, the Navy's rank of Captain is the same as Colonel in the other services

Don't have stats on the average age. However, here are some facts that would help you figure out.

It takes about 9-11 years from commissioning to make Lieutenant Commander (4 years after commissioning to make Lieutenant and between 5 and 7 more years to make Lieutenant Commander).

A regular commissioned officer has to have a bachelors degree and therefore people don't receive their commission until they graduate college. Assume that the typical minimum age of a college graduate is 21 years old (assume 4 years of college and a high school graduation age of 17). So, the minimum age (without some extraordinary event like early college graduation, early high school graduation, etc, would be about 30 years old.

Usually a person is a LCDR for approximately 4-6 years before they either retire or get promoted to Commander.

So, the normal age for a Lieutenant Commander would typically be between 30-40 (assuming some variation in age of college graduation/commission).

There are LCDRs who are far older than that range depending on how long it took them to begin their career as an officer (some people don't become Ensigns until the age of 42 or some such). In those cases, you can have much older LCDRs, but the majority are between the ages of 30 and 40.

So you'd probably say the average age of a LCDR is about 35 years old.

For instance I graduated from the Naval Academy at the age of 24. I was a Lieutenant at the age of 28 and put on Lieutenant Commander at the age of 34. I will be eligible for promotion to Commander in FY15 so, if I make it, I'll be 39 years old when I put on Commander.

I'm doing research for a book that I'm writing. What is the average age of a US Navy Lieutenant?

Around 28-30. Most graduates are around 22 when they're commissioned, and it takes about 4-8 years to go from Ensign to full Lieutenant. Front line combat officers will advance much more quickly though (e.g., SEAL's); their age is usually a few years younger.

How many Spanish American War veterans are alive?

I doubt it because they would be about 110 years old. There are very few WW I veterns alive. Lieutenant Commander Nathan E. Cook, US Navy is believed to have been the last living survivor. He did on 10 September 1992 at the age of 106. That however is a disputed claim that might be held by Jones Morgan, US Army who died on 29 August 1993 at the claimed age of 110.
