Conscription
Under various conscription (draft) acts during the Civil War, the Union army drafted men ages 18-35 years old. They report that initially the Confederate army passed conscription laws to draft men ages 18-35, but later expanded the range to include men up to 45 years old, and then in 1864, expanded the age range from 17 to 50 years old.
There are many professional basketball leagues for men over 35 years old . Most notably the NBA has many excellent players over the age of 35.

Currently, state pensions are paid to men over 65 years of age and to women over 60 years of age. The age for women to receive a pension is increasing between 2010 and 2020 by which time they will receive the state pension after 65 years. There are plans to increase the age for both men and women with the age planned to rise to 68 years by 2046.
Conscription was used in World War 1, when men wouldn't join the army the Government used conscription as a way of making men join. They had absolutely no choice.
South Africa no longer has conscription
In March 1935 Hitler reintroduced compulsory military service for all able bodied men reaching age 19.

Conscription is another word for the draft. Men were required to join the military/navy or RFC and serve.
