Non-commissioned officers (NCO) are those from the enlisted men or women who hold the rank of Corporal or equivalent (two chevrons), through to those who hold the most senior Sergeant (or equivalent) rank. Warrant Officers, although considered to be the most senior of non-commissioned officers, are a breed apart and known as the backbone of the military.

Also look up NCO Creed and read that to get a idea.

The ranks differ from each military service. In the U.S Army the NCO's are:

Corporal (CPL)

Sergeant (SGT)

Staff-Sergeant (SSG)

Sergeant First Class (SFC)

Master Sergeant (MSG)

First Sergeant (1SG)

Sergeant Major (SGM)

Command Sergeant Major (CSM)

Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) In the Air Force, a NCO or Non-commissioned officer, is an E-5 (4 stripes with a star) or above. The US Air Force NCO ranks are as follows: Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Technical Sergeant (TSgt) Master Sergeant (MSgt) (Can also be a First Sergeant: 1MSgt) Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) (Can also be a First Sergeant: 1SMSgt) Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) (Can also be a First Sergeant: 1CMSgt) Command Chief Master Sergeant (CCMSgt) Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force (CMSAF)

In the US it depends on the branch of service, for example NCO USMC starts at E-4 (enlisted 4 or Corporal) Lance Corporal would be an E-3, called non rates or regular enlisted.

Pay grade E-6 or higher. In the Army and Marine Corps, that translates to Staff Sergeant and above. In the Air Force, that would be Technical Sergeant and higher. Not sure about the Navy and Coast Guard ranks.
