A shipboard deck watch is essentially a safety and security watch on the main deck (topside on a submarine). Deck watches are stationed when a ship is in port, and they are responsible for a range of duties, including:
1. Making hourly checks of the ship's draft
2. Checking/verifying ID/clearances for visitors and allowing access
3. Maintaining a watch on the adjacent area for unauthorized vessels/small craft
4. Making general announcements
5. Sounding alarms if a topside emergency occurs
Deck watches, along with Damage Control, are typically the first watch that new sailors aboard ship qualify for.
