The president was so popular that he had just been elected in 1944 to an unprecedented fourth term. Few people knew that he was ill, and he died suddenly in April 1945, before the end of World War II, and certainly well before the end of fourth term. His vice president, Harry Truman immediately assumed office, carrying out many of Roosevelt's policies and successfully leading the nation to victory in the war. It should also be noted that one impact of the president's death was the passage of the 22nd amendment, which was ratified in 1951: it forbade future presidents from serving more than two terms.
