One answer is that this election as well as the previous one showed that the election process for the president needed to be changed. Hence the 12th amendment was proposed and ratified in time for the next election. (The 1796 election resulted in a president and vice-president with strongly opposing views. The 1800 election ended in a tie between the president and his running mate which allowed the House to muddle matters. The 12th amendment eliminated both types of problem,)

This election is sometimes called the revolution of 1800. It was a triumph of Jefferson's belief in a weaker federal government and more rights for the states. The hated alien and sedition acts were repealed. Jefferson and his fwllow Virginians occupied the White House for the next 24 years.

The election also exposed a flaw in the election system which caused a serious problem when Jefferson and his running mate, Aaron Burr tied in the election college, sending the election to the House. The 12th amendment was soon drawn up to fix the system.
