Thomas Jefferson made most of his money raising tobacco and other crops on his plantation. He was interested in studying almost everything and did a survey of the resources of Virginia. He was also a member of the bar but did not have much of a law practice. He was very active in the colonial government, serving in the Continental congresses and as a diplomat in Europe. He was the first Secretary of State under Washington and vice-president under Adams.
