Yes. Andrew's father died at age 29 a month before Andrew was born in 1767. Andrew had two brothers, three and four years older. His oldest brother died of heat exhaustion at the Battle of Stono Ferry in South Carolina in 1779, fighting for the American cause. Andrew was 12. The next year, when he was 13, Andrew joined the Army with his 16 year old brother. They were to be horseback couriers. They were captured. As prisoners, one day a British officer demanded that Andrew clean his boots. Andrew refused, and the officer slashed his face with his sword. He bore the scar the rest of his life. While prisoners both he and his brother contracted the dread disease small pox. Their mother learned of this and visited the British commander and begged for their release. Probably thinking they would die anyway, the British officer gave her the two boys. The older brother did die. When assured Andrew would survive the mother went as a volunteer nurse to tend to American prisoners held by the British in horrible conditions on old hulks of ships in Charleston Harbor, where cholera had broken out. The mother caught the disease and died too. Andrew was 14, and alone in the world, three members of his family dead in the Revolution.
