Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, NY, into a wealthy and prominent family with many connections in upper-class society. His childhood was marked by frequent trips to Europe (where he learned French and German); he attended the prestigious Groton School, a boarding school in Massachusetts where elite families sent their sons to study. He was also taught sports that were popular with the upper-class, such as yachting and playing polo.
He contracted polio in 1921 and his legs were paralyzed.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a stamp collector. His service in public office allowed him to collect many stamps on correspondence sent to him while in office. His collection was auctioned off in the 60's and 70's and collectors were able to obtain covers certified to have come from his collection.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'Cash and Carry' policy allowed for the sale of materials to belligerents only if they agreed to come and pick it up, accepting any and all risks. Some Americans objected because they believed the policy could somehow lead them into war.
