President Richard Nixon lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 in April 1971.
By lowering the voting age
On July 7, 1971, the voting age became 18 when the 26th amendment to the US constitution was certified as having been ratified.
Britains become of age at 18. This would probably mean that they are allowed to vote at this age.
The main argument for giving the vote to 18 year olds was that if an 18 year old was old enough to be drafted into the military and die for his country, then he was old enough to vote.Another argument for lowering the voting age can be summarised by the following quote:"No taxation without representation"In the US you can legally leave school at 16 years of age, start work and therefore pay tax. As such it would not be unreasonable to expect to have some say in how your tax money was spent. Therefore it could be argued that if you are old enough to fund government, you are old enough to chose who should run it and how your tax money is spent and hence should be allowed to vote.
During the Vietnam War, many Vietnam veterans criticized the U.S. government for forcing them to go to war at the age of eighteen but not allowing them to vote until age 21. As a result, the U.S. Constitution was amended in 1971, lowering the minimum voting age to 18.
The growth in public sentiment for a lowered voting age is for increased public participation.
The election of 1968 was the last U.S. presidential election in which the minimum voting age was 21. On July 1, 1971, the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, lowering the minimum voting age to 18.
Let's people vote at age 18. :D
Made the voting age 18!!!!
Some of the results of the war, was ending the draft, creating an all volunteer military and lowering the US voting age from 21 to 18.
