The US Army has many medals, too many to list. Some of the highest medals are: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldiers Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star. Many other US armed services have their own versions of other medals.
The highest and most prestigious award in the U.S. Military is the Medal of Honor.
Congress votes on anyone receiving the award and it is always awarded by the President of the United States.
Their are three different designs of the medal representing what branch you were serving in when you received the award.
They are:
Army
Marines/Navy/Coast Guard
Air Force
Upon receiving the award you get several special privileges by law. Even though it is not a rule it is expected by all branches that you salute a MOH recipient even if you outrank them by any measure.
Most modern recipients of the award suffered grievous injury or it was awarded posthumous (after death to their next of kin).
Recipients during modern warfare:
WW1-124
WW2-464
Korean War-133
Vietnam War-246
Battle of Mogadishu (the movie/book Black Hawk Down)-2
Iraq War-4
Afghanistan War-4
Hope that helps.
