One example I have seen during my adult life is when the President is put under the effects of anesthesia for an operation, like after Ronald Reagan was shot. A more complete answer is any time the President is unable to fulfill the duties of the Presidency.
A vice president may act as president if the president is unable to fulfill their duties due to death, resignation, removal from office, or temporary incapacity. This provision is outlined in the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The vice president then assumes the role and powers of the president until the president is able to resume their duties or until the end of the current term.
No. The salary of the vice president is set by the 1989 Government Salary Reform Act. The President may not unilaterally change it, though he could theoretically lobby for Congress to amend that act.
Two offices or perhaps better said positions of a US Vice President are these: 1. Presiding officer of the US Senate; and 2. At the discretion of the President, the Vice President can be a member of the National Security Council. 3. Other duties are possible based on various circumstances.
president or vice president
vice president
Technically its the VICE PRESIDENT (at this time Joe Biden) - however in recent times the Vice President no longer actively undertakes the administerial duties of overseeing the Senate except in special circumstances such as ceremonial duties or where a tied vote is expected (because the Vice President can only cast a deciding vote in a tied senate). The day to day administration is actually delegated to the President Pro Tempore (at this time Daniel Inoye who is bestowed the duty because he is the longest serving Democratic member of the Senate).
I think it may be the President pro tempore, as he is third in line if the President and the Vice President are killed or incapacitated.
The previous answer was rude and uncalled for so here's what I've found: If the President-elect dies after the Electoral college votes (Dec 20th this year) then the Vice-President Elect is inaugurated as the President. If the President-elect dies after the general election and before the Electoral College votes then congress by law may select the President This comes from the twentieth Ammendment - section 3: Section 3. If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President. If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.
The Vice President serves the people and the President. When necessary he may vote in the Senate to break a tie vote.
At present (May 2012), the US Vice President is Joe Biden.
