George Washington was a very accomplished man. In 1749 he was appointed official surveyor for Culpeper County, Virginia. In 1774 he was elected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. In 1775 Washington owned 6,500 acres at Mount Vernon, with over 100 slaves and on June 15 he was appointed general and commander-in-chief of the new Continental Army. In 1776 on July 4th, he signed the Declaration of Independence. After the war, in 1789 Washington was unanimously elected to be the first President of the United States and on April 30th he took the oath of office in New York City. In 1792 Congress established a national mint and in 1793 he was re-elected President of the United States. In 1794 on November 19th he signed the Jay Treaty to maintain trade with Great Britain. In 1796 He published his Farewell Address which was issued as a public letter. On December 14th, 1799 he died at Mount Vernon at the age of 67.
