The old prison, called "The Castle", was over 100 years old and falling apart. It was decided that it should be torn down and a new modern style prison built. The capacity of the new prison is less than half of the old one. It also has a death chamber for those on death row, however, the military has decided to perform executions in Terra Haute, IN where McVey was put to death.

The US Army Disciplinary Barracks, also known as Fort Leavenworth military prison, is still operational. However, it did face a closure threat in 2018 as part of a proposal to consolidate military prisons; however, the plan was ultimately abandoned. As of now, it remains in operation as a maximum-security prison for military personnel convicted of serious offenses.
