Franklin Pierce was the weak democratic president whose pro-southern cabinet pushed aggressive expansionist schemes. Pierce signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. This act turned Kansas into a battleground for the country's conflict over slavery.

Perhaps the toughest task presented to a President is who to call in for "so called" guidance for the historical record and for public relations advantages either real or percieved. He or she must also have a limited group close at hand whose prior guidance proved effective and in whom they genuinely can place their trust and the fate of the Nation.

Only two presidents have ever been impeached, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton (neither were removed from office). After Nixon's resignation, Vice President Gerald Ford became President. Ford became Vice President by appointment when Spiro Agnew resigned from the post due to a scandal unrelated to Watergate (the event whose cover-up led to Nixon's resignation.)
