There were $100,000 bills at one time, but private citizens couldn't hold them.

In 1934 and 1935, the US printed about 42,000 $100,000 bills. They were never put into circulation, but instead were used to transfer large amounts of funds within the Federal Reserve System in the days before electronic funds transfers were possible. Most were later destroyed although a few were kept in public collections including the one held by the Smithsonian.
