He was not rich, not from one of the old , established American families. He had had

little education and had no connection with the founding fathers, who fomented the

American revolution, conducted the Revolutionary War and wrote and ratified the

US Constitution. All of the presidents before him were "in on the ground floor", so to

speak, either founding fathers or in the case of Quincy Adams, the son of a founding

father, and all had ties and position in the administration that came before them.

Jackson came out of nowhere( the West) and had not ties with any previous president.

Before Jackson, all of the presidents were either founding fathers who were from wealthy

families and well established as the ruling class.(Quincy Adams was not a founding father,

but his father was. Moreover, before Jackson won the popular vote , but lost to Adams

when Congress chose the president, Jefferson,Madison, and Monroe , all of whom lived

within 40 miles of each other in Virginia had served for 2 terms each for a total of 24 years.

Jackson was a new breed, born of Irish parents ,had no family connections and lived in

Western Tennessee, far from the eastern establishment.

Andrew Jackson was the only president (up until then) to have not gone through formal schooling. This was one of the many things that his party, the Democratic-Republican Party, advertised to the voters. His nickname, "Old Hickory" emphasized his common background. His party often mentioned how he was born in a log cabin, and his rags-to-riches background was largely retold.
